Spartan (NY50), battant pavillon américain, a remporté, ce jeudi 5 octobre, la 12ème édition du Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy, aux Voiles de Saint-Tropez.

Déjà vainqueur en 2016, c'est la deuxième fois que Spartan inscrit son nom au palmarès du Centenary Trophy.
Avec l'un des records de participation avec 23 yachts centenaires sur la ligne de départ, la 12ème édition du Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy restera marquée par un finish très serré entre Spartan de l'Américain Charlie Ryan et le Class P Olympian, skippé par Bruno Troublé.

Depuis sa création, le Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy se dispute sous le format de la « pursuit race ». Les bateaux franchissent la ligne de départ en fonction de leur rating, le premier à franchir la ligne d'arrivée est le vainqueur. Ce format permet aux concurrents de régater sur un pied d'égalité.


Compte tenu des prévisions météo annonçant un vent faible dans le golfe, le comité de course de la Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, co-organisateur de l'événement, a donné le départ d'un parcours côtier de 9 milles avec départ et arrivée entre la Tour du Portalet de Saint-Tropez et une marque située juste à l'extérieur du golfe.

Le premier bateau à prendre le départ a été Jap (William Fife III 1897) avec un équipage mené par la légende de la voile irlandaise Harold Cudmore, suivi par Dainty (Westmacott 1922) puis des 21 autres yachts en fonction de leur rating.
Une nouvelle fois, les trois Class P, Olympian (William Gardner, 1913), Chips (Starling Burgess 1913) et Corinthian (Herreshoff 1905) ont offert un magnifique spectacle au départ, à pleine vitesse sur la ligne, comme des régatiers modernes.

Plus grands et plus puissants, donc avec un rating plus élevé, les trois15 m JI, Tuiga (William Fife III 1909), Mariska (William Fife III 1909) et The Lady Anne (William Fife III 1912) ont pris le départ en dernier.

Après un départ dans le petit temps avec environ 5-6 nœuds montant progressivement tout au long de la régate entre 8-10 nœuds. A mi-parcours, les plus petits yachts sont rattrapés et dépassés par les plus grands. Les trois Class P sont alors en tête suivi de Spartan (NY50).
Tout s'est joué en le Class P Olympian et le NY50 Spartan à quelques mètres de la ligne, et c'est finalement le NY50 Spartan qui s'est imposé après un peu plus d'une heure trente de course.

A son arrivée, Charlie Ryan, propriétaire de Spartan, était très heureux :
« C'est incroyable. C'est l'une de mes courses préférées. Pour le format de la poursuite, pour le fait que les bateaux doivent avoir 100 ans, pour le fait que chaque année il y a de nouvelles inscriptions, comme Barbara cette année. C'est cool, très cool.
De plus, nous n'avons pas souvent l'occasion de régater avec les autres bateaux centenaires, parce que nous sommes dans des classes différentes.
Nous avons l'occasion de nous battre contre des marins incroyablement bons et talentueux. Nous adorons ça.
Je remercie mon équipage pour sa performance exceptionnelle aujourd'hui. Nous étions 19 à bord et nous sommes un équipage très multiculturel et tous des passionnés, certains de mes amis sont venus juste pour cette merveilleuse régate et nous avons du plaisir à être ensemble. Le vent était très instable à la fin, nous avons donc dû nous adapter, la tactique était également délicate sur la fin de course. »

Bruno Troublé à bord du Class P Olympian, deuxième de la 12ème édition du Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy : « Le Centenary Trophy du Yacht Club de Gstaad est toujours une régate formidable parce que ça se joue souvent près de la ligne d'arrivée, c'est souvent les mêmes bateaux.
Il y a deux ans, on avait empêché Spartan de nous doubler à 100 mètres de la ligne et cette année à 100 de la ligne nous étions encore devant lui et il a réussi à nous passer. C'est une course très excitante, on est très content !
Bravo au Gstaad Yacht Club. »

« Chaque année, on a l'impression qu'on ne peut pas faire mieux et chaque année, c'est encore mieux ! Le nombre et la qualité des bateaux sont incroyables et le niveau de la compétition est exceptionnel. C'est toujours agréable d'accueillir de nouveaux amis et de voir revenir d'anciens amis et nous, au Club, voulons tous les remercier. J'espère que tout le monde a apprécié la course autant que mon équipage sur Silhouette et moi-même et que l'année prochaine nous assisterons à une nouvelle édition exceptionnelle du Centenary Trophy. »

Le Gstaad Yacht Club, célèbre ses 25 ans cette année, a été fondé en 1998 par un groupe de marin passionné avec pour mission de « créer un yacht club unique et global loin de l'eau et non pas un autre yacht club local près de la mer ». Basé dans les Alpes suisse, le Gstaad Yacht Club compte 400 membres de plus de 30 pays différents. Les membres et leurs invités aiment s'y retrouver.
Le GYC soutient des projets de voile de tous niveaux des juniors à des marins professionnels. Le club est devenu une force solide sur la scène de la voile suisse et international, surtout en voile olympique et yachts classiques.

La Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez
Fondée en 1862, la Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez organise des régates depuis plus de 160 ans. Certains de ses membres ont laissé une trace impérissable, comme Guy de Maupassant en 1887 et Paul Signac en 1892, qui font partie des pionniers de la plaisance française. Affiliée à la FFVoile et Club allié du Yacht Club de France, la SNST n'a cessé de s'agrandir avec comme leitmotiv de toujours être ouverte à la modernité et aux nouveautés tout en respectant la tradition. Fort d'une équipe de passionnés dont 16 membres du Conseil d'Administration, 5 permanents, 500 membres et de nombreux bénévoles, le Club organise de grandes épreuves comme les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, la Rolex Giraglia, les Dames de Saint-Tropez ou la course Paprec 600 Saint-Tropez. Il accueille des événements exceptionnels comme des championnats du monde et depuis 2021 l'étape française de Sail GP, ainsi qu'une étape du 52 Super Series circuit des TP 52 en 2023.La Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez est le club support de l'équipe française Orient Express Team pour la 37eme America's Cup, qui aura lieu en septembre et octobre 2024 à Barcelone.

NY50 Spartan winsGstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy 2023


The American Flagged New York 50 Spartan, wins the 12th edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy, at the Voiles de Saint Tropez,scoring a double after her previous victory in 2016.

With one of the highest participation figure in its history, 23 yachts, the 12th edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy, will be remembered for the breathtaking finale between US Charlie Ryan’s Spartan and P-Class Olympian, skippered by French icon Bruno Troublé.

Since its creation, the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy is raced with a Pursuit Race format with staggered starts, that has proved extremely attractive for the sailors and the public alike over the years.
Thanks to an especially created and constantly refined handicap system, the competitors cross the starting line according to their handicap, with the first boat to cross the finish line in front of Saint Tropez to be declared the winner.

Given a weather forecast for light wind in the gulf, the Race Committee from the Société Nautique de Saint Tropez, co-organiser of the event, opted for Course 2, a 9 miles long coastal course with start and finish between the iconic Portalet Tower of Saint Tropez and a mark set just outside the gulf.

First boat to start was the tiny gaff cutter Jap (William Fife III 1897) with a crew led by Irish sailing legend Harold Cudmore, followed by Dainty (Westmacott 1922) and in turn by all the other 21 boats, according to their rating. Once again the three P Class, Olympian (William Gardner, 1913), Chips (Starling Burgess 1913) and Corinthian (Herreshoff 1905) offered a great show at the start, separated by just a few metres and at full speed on the line, as if they were modern racers.

Bigger and more powerful, and therefore with a higher rating, the three 15M, Tuiga (William Fife III 1909). Mariska (William Fife III 1908) and The Lady Anne (William Fife III 1912) went on to close the procedure.

In a light air of 5 to 6 knots, slowly but constantly building up to reach10 knots, the centenarians headed to the turning mark and smaller boats were overtaken by the bigger ones. On the leg back to Saint Tropez, the leading pack made of the the three P Class and the NY50 Spartan , was able to get the better of the conditions and quickly reach the area off the breakwater and the finish line. In an incredibly close fought finale, it was American flagged Spartan to claim the first place, her second win after the 2016 edition, with Olympian coming in second, and Chips in third.

All in all it took the winners slightly over one hour and a half to cover the distance, not bad at all for a century old boats.




Docking in, an elated Charlie Ryan, owner of Spartan declared:
“Feels amazing. This is one of my favourite races ever. For the pursuit format, for the fact that the boats are required to be 100 years old, the fact that every year there are new entries, like Barbara this year. It’s cool, it’s very cool. Also we don’t get often the chance of racing with the other centenarian boats, because we’re in different classes. Also you get to fight against some incredibly good and talented sailors. We just love it.”

Ryan also thanked his crew for their outstanding performance today: “We were 19 on board today and we are a very multicultural crew, but we’re all corinthian , some friends come over just for this wonderful regatta and we have fun being together. The wind was very shifty at the end so we had to adjust and changing gear constantly. Tactics were also tricky, you needed to stay away of bad air, but I guess the real secret was hard work.”


Bruno Troublé skipper of 2nd winner 'P´4 Olympian', despite having missed the opportunity of an historic fourth victory, payed tribute to his competitors ability to keep the pressure up until the finish:
”The Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy remains a great regatta because it's often played out close to the finish line and it's often the same boats. Two years ago, we managed to avoid Spartan overtaking us 100 metres from the line and this year, just 100 metres from the line, we were still ahead of them and they managed to overtake us. It's a really exciting race and we're really pleased! Well done to the Gstaad Yacht Club.”

Daniel Heine, the Club’s sailing officer and an experienced sailor himself, who participated to five editions of the Trophy said:
“Every year it seems it can’t get better and every year it gets better! The number and quality of the boats we had are amazing and the level of the competition was incredible.
It’s always nice to welcome new friends and to see old friends come back and we, at the Club, want to thank them all. I hope everyone enjoyed the racing as much as my crew on Silhouette and I did and that next year we will see another exceptional edition of the Centenary Trophy.”


The Trophy, handed over every year is also over centenarian, having been created by Wakely and Wheeler of London in 1911, that is exactly 100 years before the first edition of the regatta.

The Gstaad Yacht Club
The Gstaad Yacht Club was founded in 1998, and therefore is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, by a group of sailor enthusiasts with the vision to "create a unique global yacht club away from the waters, instead of another local club by the waters". Based in the Swiss mountains and in the beginning, very often acknowledged with surprise, the GYC developed to a club with more than 400 members from over 35 different countries and to a place where members and their guests love to meet.
The GYC supports sailing projects on all levels from juniors to professional sailors. The club has become a solid force on the Swiss sailing scene, especially among Olympic sailing and internationally among the classic yachts.
