It was a fantastic weekend for Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari !

Sebastian’s Vettel’s Montreal win was the 50th of his F1 career. He’s the fourth driver to reach a half century of wins, the others being Alain Prost in 1993, Michael Schumacher in 2001 and Lewis Hamilton in 2016.


After a difficult Friday, the German and his team bounced back strongly and delivered a perfect performance in qualifying and in the race.
Sebastian took pole on Saturday, got a good start on Sunday and then controlled the race to take his 50th career win in fine style.
The four-time world champion now needs just one more win to equal Alain Prost’s career total. It was also a significant victory as Ferrari hadn’t won in Montreal for 14 years and Sunday’s triumph coincided with the 40th anniversary of Gilles Villeneuve’s win in the first GP to be held at the circuit that now bears his name.
After a couple of races on the back foot, Ferrari fought back in Montreal and Vettel is back in the lead of the championship. If there’s one area where the Maranello team have improved over the past couple of years, it’s in their ability to develop the car, which is vital when you’re chasing titles. Vettel ran a new power unit in Montreal, which seemed to help, and there has also been continuous progress on the aero side, which is cause for optimism for fans of the Prancing Horse.

Once again, Montreal gave Formula 1 a great welcome. The grandstands were packed, with ticket sales up by 28% according to the organisers, and there was plenty going on downtown, where the streets were decked out in the colours of Formula 1 and the teams.
There was plenty of excitement and emotion on track, too, particularly when Jacques Villeneuve drove the Ferrari 312 T3 with which his father Gilles won Montreal’s maiden F1 race in 1978.

In Montreal, Max Verstappen, 5th  Red Bull Racing, scored his second fastest lap in a row with a time 1:13.864s set on lap 65 of Sunday’s race. It means that Red Bull have now taken five out of seven fastest laps in 2018.
Daniel Ricciardo topped the race lap times in Australia, China and Spain. The other two (Bahrain and Azerbaijan) have gone to Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas.

Daniel Ricciardo - race preview

“I have raced at Paul Ricard but I don’t know what configuration we will be using compared to back then.
We’ve come from two street races with Monaco and Montreal, where the risk and reward is a lot higher than at Paul Ricard, which is a pretty open circuit.
As far as adrenaline goes, it’s probably a bit more mellow than the last few tracks but if the racing is good then it makes up for it, so hopefully we will get that balance. There are some long technical corners, which aren’t always that fun, but they’re a challenge and if you get them right you appreciate it. The track will also allow some variations in driving technique and style, which could make it interesting. It can get quite windy, so down the back straight there could be some slip streaming and good overtaking opportunities.
It’s cool having a French Grand Prix back on the calendar and fingers crossed it provides a good race not only for the French fans but the rest of the world.
Maybe I will even speak perfect French by the end of the weekend as it’s been a month of French speaking races. Merci beaucoup, enchanté.”
